Our Focus In Honduras
Nuevo Paraiso
The Nuevo Paraiso orphanage project is a village community in rural Honduras that houses 150 children who have either been given up by their families or rescued from tragic living conditions. At Nuevo Paraiso, children are raised in loving and safe family units where they are provided with education, health care, and all other necessities. Thousands of children have grown up in the orphanage and gone on to university or found jobs — breaking generational patterns of trauma and neglect.
Reyes Irene School for Girls
“The girls in the school face many challenges. Living in poverty, domestic violence, gang violence, racism as indigenous people, drug and alcohol abuse in their families, teenage pregnancy, abuse in the workplace… to name a few. The school helps girls transform into confident and capable young women who become leaders in their families and communities.”
-Anne Morawetz, President of Friends of Honduran Children
Schools and Scholarships
School serves as a source of education, community, and child development. These programs are particularly necessary in areas where an education can pull children out of devastating poverty and give them purpose and possibility. In Honduras, school is free until 6th grade, after which students must pay $250 per year (an unobtainable cost for most families, especially in rural communities). On top of donations of school supplies and classroom equipment, Friends of Honduran Children provides scholarships to help students attend their local schools. They also support elementary schools in very remote areas, delivering annual shipments of school supplies, clothing, and shoes to the students, and truckloads of food sacs for their families ensuring the best possible opportunities for success.
